I keep my heaviest item (my food bag) close to my back and centered in my pack, book-ended by lighter items. First, I fold my sleeping pad the width of my pack, or roughly 12” wide. I place the pad flat against the back panel using it as a make-shift frame. Next item to go in is my quilt, safely stored in a dyneema dry bag. Then, I layer “floater items” ie. clothes bag, rain jacket or down jacket or any other items that might need to move around depending on circumstance and weather conditions. Food bag goes in next and the shelter on top. Water bottles in the right side pocket, cook system in the left. I keep a daily snack bag in the bottom pocket. I can easily reach my water and snacks without stopping. All other fast access items that I might need are in the front mesh pocket. My pack is balanced and packed in a way that flows with my routine.
